Mebane Racer Derek Boyd To Compete In Pikes Peak International Hill Climb On June 27th
MEBANE, NC — Three drivers from North Carolina will take part in the “Race to the Clouds” next weekend. Mebane, North Carolina resident Derek Boyd is one of them.
Boyd has taken part in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb since 2014. His introduction to racing came during his high school years.
“I would do some SCCA auto crossing, so, get into a parking lot with a bunch of guys and drive through cones and try not to hit any and go as fast as you can.” says Boyd
After high school, Boyd took a nearly 10-year break from racing. Born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the site of Pikes Peak, he is very familiar with the race and jumped on the opportunity to compete when his dad asked him.
“He got this EVO 10 and called me and said, hey, you wanna build a hill climb car and go up Pikes Peak.”
His best finish was second place last year since starting in 2014.
“We kind of go there on stages, with how difficult Pikes Peak is, it is a battle just to finish and get to the top of the mountain, and it’s you versus the mountain.
Right now our goal is to get below that 10 minute barrier, go sub 10 and get in that nine minute club which is still very elusive.” says Boyd
