With Slayer riding off into the sunset on their final North American tour this year, which includes a stop in Denver on Saturday, I thought it best that I pay tribute to the band with another one of their covers. Originally recorded by Steppenwolf, Born To Be Wild is a classic, an anthem of the open road. Which is appropriate here because Slayer’s version of the track is found in a rather unexpected place, a compilation released by NASCAR in 2002 called NASCAR: Crank It Up. Last Thursday the Pumpkins stopped in New Jersey of all places to do a 30th anniversary show and they loaded up the set list with a lot of special guests. The band has been playing the track on tour for a little while and included a studio version on their latest album How To Live (As Ghosts) as a bonus track available only on copies sold at Best Buy, yes before Best Buy stopped selling CD’s. Check out 10 Years’...read more
For tonight’s cover we take a listen to the creepified Message In A Bottle from Machine Head’s 1999 album The Burning Red. The original was popularized by The Police and was a huge hit for the band. Machine Head slow it down and give it a creepier, more menacing twist that I am digging! Hit play and get ready for the goosebumps. For more Hump The Covers Off check out my blog...read more
