F**K IT, WE’LL DO IT … LIVE … AT BUDOKAN … with OZZY OSBOURNE, Tonight at 9!

‘Live at Budokan’ is a CD/DVD combo that was released by Ozzy on today’s date, the 25th of June in 2002. It was recorded at the Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo, Japan in February of ’02 during his ‘Down to Earth’ tour. This live album is not an instant classic like the excellent ‘Tribute’ or ‘Live & Loud’ albums, but Ozzy and his band, consisting of longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde, Robert Trujillo (soon to be in Metallica) on bass, Mike Bordin (of Faith No More) on drums and “the guy you never see” John Sinclair on keyboards, take Japan by storm! And when it comes to Japanese crowds, well, let me tell you that next to Brazilian ones they are pretty much the best rock crowds EVER at concerts! They love to ROCK!

The setlist is a fairly good mixture of older Ozzy solo classics, along with one Sabbath track (Paranoid of course) and some newer songs off ‘Down to Earth’ which was Ozzy’s most recent album at the time. The band is super-tight and spot on! And Zakk’s playing is as good as it always is. And as far as Ozzy’s voice goes, well even I have to admit that he was never this amazing singer, although he did have a much bigger range in the past. He got where he is because his voice is unique and that’s what makes him stand out. I don’t know how much of this album was later touched up in the studio but his voice sounds pretty good actually. It’s not perfect but it never has been, at least live anyways. Overall Ozzy puts on a great performance and that’s all that really matters!

The DVD portion of ‘Live at Budokan’ is largely shot in widescreen, except for the drum cam behind Mike Bordin that is pointed towards the audience, which is shot in 4:3. The picture format is a standard 4:3 aspect, with letter-boxing for all of the widescreen shots. Also, the DVD features the song “Suicide Solution” with Zakk Wylde’s accompanying guitar solo which was cut from the CD for time restraints. The DVD also contains bonus Osbournes reality show styled features which are pretty cool if you were addicted to the show like me! \,,/ And last but least you can buy the CD and DVD separately or packaged together as a CD/DVD combo, however the latter is getting harder and harder to find. In the end, if you are a huge Ozzy fan like me then this is a must have for your collection and if not well I suggest sticking with the more classic live albums I mentioned earlier like ‘Tribute’ or ‘Live & Loud’ or even ‘Speak of the Devil’ that features only a live set of Sabbath songs. But hey, that’s just my opinion.
