Anthrax is an American thrash metal band from New York City, formed in 1981 by guitarist Scott Ian and bassist Dan Lilker. The group was considered one of the leaders of the thrash metal scene during the 1980s. When the genre’s popularity increased, Anthrax was one of its “big four” with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. As of 2014 the band has released ten studio albums, a number of singles and an EP with American hip hop group Public Enemy. According toNielsen SoundScan Anthrax sold 2.5 million records in the United States from 1991 to 2004, with worldwide sales of over 15 million.

Anthrax has cited Black Sabbath as one of their influences. The band has covered two different Black Sabbath songs, ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath’ on their 1987 I’m the Man EP and ‘Neon Knights’ for the 2014 Ronnie James Dio – This Is Your Life tribute album.

Anthrax opened for Ozzy on the No Rest For The Wicked Tour ’88 – ’89 and played on Ozzfest 2005 with a reunited original Black Sabbath line-up.

Did You Know? Ozzy plays the ‘NOT!’ man (Anthrax’s mascot) in the band’s Antisocial video.
